  • sunbeam: Much madness is divinest Sense-

    To a discerning Eye-

    Much Sense -the starkest Madness-

    'Tis the Majority

    In this, as All prevail-

    Assent-and you are sane-

    Demur-you're straightway dangerous-

    And handled with a Chain-

  • Reason submitted

  • sunbeam: This is a great poem to read if you are feeling out of step with the world !

  • Comment or review

  • sunbeam: Emily Dicknson was only recognised as a poet after her death. She has since be recognised as one of the most important American poets.

She was very prolific with  around 1800 poems to her name dealing with mainly philosophical and metaphysical  themes.

Her unique use of language ,syntax and punctuation make her seem almost contemporary instead of an isolated, unmarried woman of the 19th century (1830-1886)

  • What do you know about this poet or poem that others may not?

  • sunbeam: She became increasily eccentric and secluded as she grew older, until by the age of thirty she was a virtual recluse, communicating only through letters , and would only wear white.
