  • Lyrics

  • Dar: I dont take coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
Im an englishman in new york

See me walking down fifth avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
Im an englishman in new york

Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york
Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york

If, manners maketh man as someone said
Then hes the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york
Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york

Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candles brighter than the sun

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run

If, manners maketh man as someone said
Then hes the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york
Im an alien Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in new york</div>

  • henning: be yourself, no matter what they say!

  • Dar: Englishman in New York" is a song by Sting, from his 1987 album ...Nothing Like the Sun.

The "Englishman" in question is the famous eccentric Quentin Crisp. Sting wrote the song not long after Crisp moved from London to an apartment in New York's Bowery.

  • henning: this line of lyrics has shaped me in my youth as many other lyrics of sting did. though, i have to admit that i do not like the 'new sting' and i didn't pay any attention to the police reunion...

  • Reason submitted

  • Dar: I went to New York in the late 80's aspart of a photography project and ended up visiting the place a lot in the next 18months. This song was always in my head (despite being a Welshman) when I was there and always takes me back there.

  • What do you know about this artist or track that others may not?

  • Dar: Quentin Crisp had remarked jokingly to the musician "...that he looked forward to receiving his naturalization papers so that he could commit a crime and not be deported."
